Entry was easy, which was good because 2 in our party are handicapped. There was seating to rest, and ramps with handrails that made moving around easier. And while the David exhibit was busy, it wasn't too busy to get clear views of the details. A great experiene.

The guide was knowledge and it was very interesting! My kids (13, 11, 7) and I all had a great time and learned a lot! Hardly any wait in line to get in, and didn't feel rushed in the exhibit at all. Spent a lot of time at the David and from multiple angles. Loved it! It was my first experience with a guided tour and I so glad we did it! BUT I am disappointed with the back end of things - when booking the tour it said to meet far away from the accademia and instead to meet near the uffitzi - thst didn't make sense to me, so I chatted online with someone and they confirmed the location and that we'd walk with our guide over. The day before the tour I got an email confirming that same location. When we arrived I was told we were at the wrong location and needed to hurry over to the meeting spot by the accademia. We then needed to RUN through the city to get there on time so we wouldn't miss the tour. We arrived sweaty and frazzled. The tour guide was fantastic, but the communication leading up to the tour was not good.

Our guide Lori was absolutely amazing during this tour. She was enthusiastic and engaging. Her knowledge, detailed but not overwhelming. It was great to listen along to a story that provided context not only to the artwork/pieces on display, but also Michaelangelo personally and the kind of person he was, as well as a quick revision of Florence's history and other families/artists like the Medicis in an interesting way with fun facts. A well executed tour, timed well through the rooms and with plenty of time to analyse Michaelangelo's David up close and in detail. Highly recommended.

My absolute favorite stop of my trip. Even though I have been before David still brings me to tears. Aside from David the museum has so many incredible pieces that are truly an honor in person. A trip to Florence is not complete without visiting la Galleria dell'Accademia.

Lorenzo had great knowledge of the area and was extremely personable while also being professional. We appreciated explanations of the local plant life and history of the area. We had good recommendations for places to visit and future tours. The hiking tour in the hills were better than expected. Nice views of the valley and countryside and woodlands.

The Accademia Gallery in Florence is a cultural haven showcasing Renaissance art, notably Michelangelo's iconic David. Its rich collection includes masterpieces, sculptures and paintings. Interestingly, it also houses a unique collection of rare musical instruments — from the private collections of various royal families in the Tuscan region. A trip to this museum provides an immersive journey into the artistic brilliance of Italy's cultural heritage.

  • During the high season, same-day tickets are often unavailable, especially for popular time slots, and ticketing queues can stretch up to 2 hours. Booking tickets online saves you time and ensures you don’t miss your preferred entry.
  • Timed entry tickets grant you access to the Accademia within a specific time slot, but you’ll still need to queue at the ticket counter before entry.
  • Skip-the-line tickets are a great way to avoid this wait. These tickets let you bypass the ticketing queue entirely and head straight to the entrance, saving significant time, especially during peak hours.
  • For an even smoother experience, hosted entry tickets are a great option. A host will meet you at the entrance, collect your ticket for you, and help you enter the gallery. Keep in mind, though, that a host is not a guide—they won’t stay with you or provide commentary.
  • Pair hosted entry with an audio guide to explore the gallery at your own pace while listening to fascinating stories about its masterpieces.
  • Guided tours are led by experts who share captivating insights into the gallery’s history and artwork. With a guide, you’ll learn all about Michelangelo’s David and discover other treasures you might otherwise miss.
  • If you’re not a fan of crowds, a small group tour is an excellent choice. Enjoy an up-close and peaceful view of Michelangelo’s 17-foot-tall statue of David on an intimate private tour with only a handful of people.
  • If you want to make the most of your time in Florence, consider a combo ticket for the Accademia and Uffizi Galleries. These two museums showcase the very best of Florentine art and culture, and combo tickets allow you to visit on different days so you can explore each at your own pace.

Michelangelo's David and Brunelleschi’s Dome VIP Early Access Tour

Hall of the Colossus

The first gallery you see when you enter the museum, the real star of the show here is Giambologna's magnificent sculpture, Rape of the Sabines.

The Tribune

The Tribune’s reputation precedes it: home to Michelangelo’s David, one of the most famous sculptures to have ever been created.

The Hall of the Prisoners

This museum hall is named so after the ‘Slaves’ — four large nude sculptures created by Michelangelo, namely: Awakening Slave, Atlas, Bearded Slave, and Young Slave — housed here.

Gipsoteca Bartolini

This hall showcases a selection of the finest 19th-century plaster casts by one of the most brilliant artists of his time, Lorenzo Bartolini, and his student, Luigi Pampaloni.

Pacino's Room

This room is dedicated to Florentine Gothic and Renaissance paintings from the 14th to the 16th century. Among the masterpieces on display is the Tree of Life by Bonaguida.

Giotteschi Room

This room is a treasure trove of artworks by Giotto and his students, known as the Giotteschi. The room houses six works by Giotto, including four panels from the Stefaneschi Altarpiece, as well as the Madonna and Child Enthroned.

Orcagna's Room

This hall houses the work of four brothers: Andrea (nicknamed “Orcagna,” meaning “archangel”), Nardo, Matteo, and Jacopo di Cione. Many of their creations are altarpieces. One exceptional work is Jacopo di Cione's Coronation of the Virgin.

Museum of Musical Instruments

Playing host to the Grand Ducal Collection, the hall has about 50 ancient instruments on display that showcase the evolution of musical instruments over time.

David
1/4

David

This one needs no introduction — David is what draws scores of people world over to the Accademia Gallery. The sheer mastery of carving a colossal marble figure with such anatomical precision and delicate details is breathtaking.

Michelangelo's Slaves

Unlike most sculptures that strive for polished perfection, the "Slaves" embrace their unfinished state. The chisel marks remain visible, revealing Michelangelo's thought process and the evolving form emerging from the raw marble.

Rape of the Sabines at Accademia

Witness Giambologna’s sculpture in the Mannerist technique, showcasing the abduction of a Sabine woman. The sculpture conveys the tension and drama accompanying the action of violent capture.

Cassone Adimari

This is an intricately decorated wedding chest created by Renaissance artist Apollonio di Giovanni in the 15th century. It is adorned with detailed scenes like dancing couples, colorful drapery and attention to worn garments.

Accademia gallery hours

Tuesday to Sunday: 8:15am to 6:50pm.
Last admission: 6:20pm.

Closed: Every Monday, January 1, and December 25.

Best time to visit: Visit Accademia Gallery during the low season, from November to February. Avoid weekends and public holidays and visit during the early mornings or after 5pm to experience smaller crowds.
